i, Josh.
After two decades working as a creative director on some of the biggest brands in the world, I broke out on my own and began a second act as a photographer. It was easily one of the most difficult things I've ever done. To let go of everything that was safe and secure and essentially start over into a career that has no real path or structure, it was a tearing away of the fabric of my identity. Medium has played an important role throughout that entire process.
As one of the top writers on photography here on Medium since 2017, I've documented (and continue to document) nearly everything I learn, as I learn it. I would love to say that I do this entirely for the good of the creative community, but that wouldn't be all together truthful. Much of this has been for my own sanity - a form of processing. I'm saved by the fact that my journey - that of a creative soul trying to make it in this big mean world - is reflective of so many others’ journeys. And so this semi-self-absorbed endeavor of writing about what I love also happens to be a thing that bonds us. And in that, this writing endeavor has become something that has truly grown with me.
On Medium and writing: I enjoy writing very much and I work at it a lot. I've seen the power of a well-written piece and a sharp idea, explained well. I take writing as seriously as I do photography and I try to do it respectfully and with craft. I kill far more of my own stories than I publish. I constantly strive to remove the word "I" from articles. This one notwithstanding. For more of my work, you can visit my photography portfolio at www.joshsrose.com. See you inside.
