My friend Gregg turned me on to the podcast, “The 10 Songs That Made Me,” where “artists and tastemakers are prompted to share 10 songs that marked meaningful moments in their lives.” Like anyone who loves music, I couldn’t resist an assignment like this.
As a photographer, music swirls around and informs my work. It’s present before, during and after shoots. Many ideas come directly from music, especially in my dance photography. But really the deep connection to music is true for anybody, artist or otherwise. Music is somehow both something invented, but also essential. And I think music does make you, or it can. Or it should. When experienced deeply, music marks and defines moments, eras and experiences. Louis Armstrong said, “Music is life itself.” This is my life:
