This series is supported by Narrative Select. Narrative Select is a lightning-fast culling software that uses AI to help you quickly assess, cull and rate your images. I use Select on nearly every job I do, especially assignment work, like this one here in Qatar. And there’s a free version. If interested, click here.

How much of a 16-hour flight does anyone else in the world need to sit through? This is the conundrum of storytellers. To describe but not to bore.

Airplane flights are the moments between chapters. But in fact, a lot happens in 16 hours of flight — because it’s 16 hours — it’s just not very momentous. In fact, save for some turbulence, entirely cerebral. As a bit of side history, I spent two decades on and off airplanes. As an agency CD, I was pitching regularly all over the country. Then, when I went over to a global firm, it was all over the world. I once flew to NYC from LA for one meeting with the head of Samsung and by the end of the meeting, I was scheduling a flight from NYC to London, for a week — I had no suitcase and had to buy all new clothes once in London.
