Oh no, that was not happening in the 50's in Vancouver, when/where Herzog started shooting. Up until 1954, Kodachrome film came with an envelope you would send your film back to the lab in. In '54, a lawsuit changed that practice, but it would be years after before quick-turn labs would become that commonplace.
