Eelona Sny Ah, well that’s even simpler an answer. I don’t use AF or any DR/HDR settings when I shoot. My camera here is a manual-only rangefinder. In this shot I was just focused on the person walking. If he wasn’t there, I’d have likely focused a little further down, toward the shaft of light.

I rely on my sensor to offer me good dynamic range and it’s the main reason I shoot with full frame cameras. I don’t like having filters on my lenses (unless I’m shooting video) and I don’t like the look of HDR images. In most cases, dark shadows are recoverable and blown out highlights aren’t, so my quick metering will be for the highlights. I do keep clipping warnings on in my camera and that’s pretty much how I meter — when the red flashing stops, I’m good! :)
